AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID is a college preparation program targeting students in the academic middle that have a strong desire to go to college and a willingness to work hard. The AVID elective is a rigorous curriculum focusing on writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading skills. These strategies are implemented school-wide for all students. AVID students benefit from added support in developing critical thinking skills and Cornell note-writing strategies with tutorials twice weekly.

Tutorials, which are a key component of AVID, are a priority at Evergreen. In tutorials, students learn the process of inquiry, using collaboration and questioning to seriously address academic problems and points of confusion in their other classes. Our AmeriCorps volunteers are trained in AVID strategies and spend a year with us at Evergreen helping students in AVID.

All classrooms follow AVID WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). These offer:
  • Focused Note-Taking
  • Authentic Writing
  • Costa's Levels of Thinking
  • Socratic Seminars
  • Philosophical Chairs
  • Peer Collaboration
  • Goal Development
  • Organizational Skills
  • Critical Reading Strategies
  • And much more!

On February 9th, 2009, Evergreen became a National Demonstration School. This means that other schools around the district, state, country, and world can come to Evergreen and see how AVID works because Evergreen is a model school for outstanding AVID implementation school-wide. This is a prestigious honor for us. All the students and staff made this possible. In order to be a National Demonstration School, the AVID strategies need to be school-wide. Evergreen was re-certified as a National Demonstration School in the spring of 2014 and again in the Fall of 2016!

Evergreen Middle School offers the AVID elective class in 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
